Obituary of Rebecca “Becky” Jean Johnson
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rebecca “Becky” Jean Johnson on December 13, 2023. Becky, a beloved resident of Marquette, has been called to her eternal home by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She peacefully departed this world after a brief stay at UP Health System – Marquette. Born on July 15, 1944, to Leonard and Lolita Johnson, Becky spent her entire life in Marquette, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community involvement.
Early Life and Education
Becky’s journey began in Marquette, where she was raised by her loving parents. She was a vibrant and active student, participating in various sports activities during her time at Graveraet High School. Whether it was volleyball, badminton, basketball, or tennis, Becky excelled in every sport she pursued. She was a proud member of the class of 1963 and cherished her high school memories.
Professional Life
Throughout her life, Becky held several jobs, each contributing to her diverse skill set and strong work ethic. From her early days at Erickson Radio Shop and Colorvision to her long-standing tenure at Northern Michigan University’s Food Service, Becky dedicated herself to her work and made a positive impact on those around her.
Community Involvement
Becky’s devotion to her faith and community was unwavering. As an active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, she generously shared her time and talents. Despite not being able to read music, Becky possessed a beautiful voice and found joy in singing. She actively participated in the church choir, both as a member of the junior choir in her younger years and later as part of the senior choir. Additionally, Becky served as an engaged member of the Women of the Moose, holding various positions and representing her community with pride.
Personal Interests
When Becky wasn’t busy with her commitments, she enjoyed indulging in her personal interests. She was an avid bowler, a passionate supporter of her beloved Michigan State Spartans, and a skilled cribbage player. One of the highlights of her fandom was receiving a personalized, autographed photo of Tom Izzo from Gordy LeDuc, which brought her immense joy. Football was another passion of Becky’s, and she avidly followed teams like the Minnesota Vikings, the Kansas City Chiefs, and, of course, the Packers. She also found solace in her daily routine of driving around Park Cemetery and enjoying the serene beauty of the lake and island.
Family and Survivors
Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Lolita Johnson, her sister-in-law Mary Johnson, and her two brothers, Douglas and Frederick. She leaves behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on her three sisters: Lorraine “Billie” Johnson of Marquette, Pauline “Tina” Johnson of Mission Point in Ishpeming, and Judy (Joe) Gregorich of Marquette. Additionally, Becky is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives who will forever hold her dear in their hearts.
Reunion in Heaven
As Becky embarks on her eternal journey, she will be joyfully reunited with the heavenly choir of our Messiah. Among the voices that will accompany her are Jim Shirtz, Kathy Soltwisch, Jan Summersett, Hildegarde, and her closest friend. In the embrace of her loved ones, Becky will experience everlasting peace, free from pain and suffering. This Christmas, she finds solace in the loving presence of Jesus and her family and friends.
